Mortality and Life Expectancy Differentials by Lifetime Earnings for Korean Workers Covered by the National Pension Scheme
Woo Hae-Bong

Abstract
This study analyzes mortality and life expectancy differentials by lifetime earnings for male workers who were born between 1929 and 1950 and who were covered by the Korean national pension in 1988. This study finds that the top half of the average relative earnings distribution is more likely than the bottom half to show lower mortality risk and higher life expectancy. Second, the increase in life expectancy over 20 years of successive birth cohorts has been much greater than the increase in the mortality inequality by average relative earnings over time, which indicates that the bottom half as well as the top half of the average relative earnings distribution also experienced significant improvement in life expectancy over the past 20 years. Finally, although the bottom half also gained significant increase in life expectancy, this study finds that the improvement in life expectancy was not equally shared across lifetime earnings levels, indicating that the top half of the average relative earnings distribution has experienced faster mortality improvement than the bottom half.
